This paper critically examines the prevalence of rape in Nigeria, exploring its underlying causes, various types, and the profound psychological impacts on victims. Despite existing legal frameworks, the inadequacies in law enforcement and societal stigmatization contribute to the persistent nature of this crime. The review methodology involved searching for articles from various academic literatures online. Factors such as modernization, peer pressure, and a weak criminal justice system exacerbate the issue, while poor parenting and entrenched gender norms further perpetuate rape culture. The study advocates for a comprehensive overhaul of the legal definitions and penalties associated with rape, including the adoption of more severe punishments like the death penalty, and calls for closed trials to protect victims' identities. It also emphasizes the need for educational campaigns to destigmatize rape and encourage victims to come forward. The paper highlights the importance of proactive parental guidance and the domestication of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, 2015, across all states in Nigeria. By addressing these multifaceted challenges, the paper argues for a more robust and victim-centered approach to combating rape, ensuring that justice is served, and victims are supported in their recovery. The recommendations provided aim to create a safer and more just society where the rights and dignity of all individuals are upheld.
