This paper reviews environmental data requirements and procedure for designing inundation canals using design tables for tidal fish farms in brackish water environments. It summarizes baseline data that should be available prior to design process such as topographic map of the area, ground profile of canal right of way, tidal range, water level records, soil type and properties, as well as the underlying principles governing design specification of canal such as bed slopes, side slopes, carrying capacity, hydraulic radius and coefficient of roughness. It is hoped that this review paper will complement existing body of knowledge to simplify the task of designing inundation canals, as part of larger efforts at seeking sustainable fish production and human development in Nigeria and beyond.
